3: I will say, without hesitation, that this is a basically impossible question for me to answer. I treasure so many songs it’s like being asked which kid you like better. And the answers often change. But I will list 10 songs that I completely adore and can’t live without.

  1. “Call Me” - Throwing Muses
  2. “You’re No Rock n Roll Fun” - Sleater-Kinney
  3. “I Shall Be Released” - Nina Simone
  4. “Oliver’s Army” - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
  5. “Dreaming” - Blondie
  6. “One Step Ahead” - Aretha Franklin
  7. “Tainted Love” - Gloria Jones
  8. “Kiss Them For Me” - Siouxsie & The Banshees
  9. “Gutless” - Hole
  10. “Rebel Girl” - Bikini Kill
(Other close contenders for this list would be “Get Up” and “Dig Me Out” by S-K, “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore, “Town Without Pity” by Gene Pitney and “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton.)
14: The Big Chill soundtrack for sure. My Mom used to play this all the time when I was growing up and it’s a huge part of why I love the soul and girl group stuff I love now. The funny thing is I’ve never even seen the movie!
20: If a song/band/musician/artist is popular it/they must be good! This is a total load of malarkey. Never underestimate the power of hype and press ramming someone down our throats until we believe it’s true. I will never forget how much press I read about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and how life changing their live shows were. Then I saw them live and it was like watching three people phone it in because they were already over being famous. I found I liked them on record a lot more. I also find it hilarious when most pop stars today are given credit for their songs being good/catchy/fun when really it’s their songwriters and producers who are responsible. You or I could be doing the vocals and it wouldn’t matter, the producers will make it sound fabulous.
